Originally its name was Victoria football league, founded in 1897 and its headquarters was in Melbourne, Victoria. The most individual premiership was won by the retired captain of Hawthorn, Michael Tuck. His name is in the Guinness book of world record for his achievements. He played for Hawthorn from 1972 to 1991.
